Lithograph

In the second half of life
when I start to think as much about my end
           as about my beginnings
I come back to visit these windy heights

Starting at the end, ending at the beginning
here all the great inland rivers of my youth
start thin and chilly
before pouring out of the high country
onto the flat plains
and winding their fat, black muddy way

backwards into my beginnings

and the dry stony broken high plains
from where I hail
little rain and what there is, much snow
are mirrored like a black and white photograph
in my present tense

I walk the squeaking floorboards of our life
listen to the traitor sounds of tortured pine
while translucent leaves the colour of old blood
shaped like the paw prints of strange, shadowy beasts
fall in waves

Like a perfectly curved universe
where the beginning is also the end
nothing starts
but something else,
to balance it, ends
and, in exact reverse,

no thing ends without a parallel beginning

moving in some undefinable directionexpanding at the speed of light
until, with a cataclysmic halt,
cracking and grinding galaxies
           everything turns back
time begins to run in reverse

Tired of the flicker of the city
the tizz of late-night parties
           after a dizzying tumble
through more than a decade
of lost promises
we have escaped the gravitational pull of great cities
moved from a vertical to a horizontal world
edges widening out to infinity

The logic of air strike

Our City Planner takes his holidays in bouts
like a case of sickness
only a week at a time

Afraid of fait accomplis or a coup d'etat

Checks his carefully-numbered parking spot
for intruders
inspects his mail for bombs

Our City Planner
likes whispering in corridors
walking with his back to walls
His life is spent
behind sandbags and barbed wire
wanting to follow those dug in even further

People get uncomfortable in the lunch room
lower their voices
read their papers
sit alone at a separate table

A clipped voice
ploughing through the business at hand
and the troublesome ratepayers

Understands the logic of air strike
and heavy armour
raising your voice impatiently
with those under you

and speaking silently
with those above

A wild party appeared from nowhere

1

You were making me laugh
so we formed a committee
Your long black hair bounced on your shoulders

We must have driven miles
I got to bed about 5 am
after Christmas Day

2

Dancing on our chairs
falling on our ears
getting slightly older

I went to work
I felt unusual
rain jogged my memory
like the minutes of a meeting

3

Like a jigsaw puzzle,
finding pieces that fit
Your clothes thrown together in a pile
sprawled on the floorboards,
or suspended over chairs

The warm smell of your body
on the bed
after you'd gone home

You on the phone
taken aback on the switchboard
cutting off callers

I was asking lots of questions
you were talking excitedly,
with your slightly nervous laugh

hoping to avoid the point

4

Like a colander
         catching
     fine washed rice
I am recollecting
lots of little things

Like a developing logic
something follows something else -
and it makes sense!

Things happen suddenly
I feel like planes have landed
or visitors dropped in
unexpected letters through the door

a wild party appeared from nowhere

Sipping Drambuie through a straw

Sipping Drambuie through a straw,
I suggested
You laughed in reply,
banging along on gravel roads,
heading for Robe

The rain doesn't let up
We drive in silence
watching the wheeling galahs

I have lots to tell you
You are probably the same

But it's hard to talk
in a car
on sloshy gravel roads
heading for Robe
